OHYUNG - IOWA

IOWA is the follow-up record to OHYUNG’s 2025 release 'You Are Always On My Mind'. Recorded while living in Iowa’s DIY art scene for a year, IOWA’s cinematic swells can be attributed to OHYUNG’s concurrent soundtrack work between films Happyend (2024) and Sorry, Baby (2025), capturing the stillness, pain, and embrace of changes of her life. 

Half-internet, half-physical: chopped up and distorted Christian choral music is funneled through cassettes and tube compressors. Textured high-end synthesizers mixed with field recordings from OHYUNG’s own phone, assembled as a sprawling score. IOWA is an ode to the vast beauty of the Midwest, fields of corn, rolling hills, harsh winters, tornado sirens, and the trans people that survive despite the threat of right-wing christofascism. In her own words: “IOWA is my love letter to Iowa City and the Midwest, my experimental, trans Bruce Springsteen Nebraska.”

All proceeds from vinyl sales will be donated to the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund. This fund distributes critical resources in a state that has banned gender affirming care for minors, removed transgender civil rights protections, and eliminated gender affirming care for transgender Iowans on Medicaid.
